Driving to Yas Island? A Quick Tire Check
Thousands of fans drive to Yas Island from Dubai and the northern emirates over race weekend, much of it on long highway stretches. Since 2022, F1 cars run on 18-inch Pirelli tires - closer to what you will find on many road cars than the old 13-inch wheels. Your own tires do not need to be race-ready, but a few minutes of checks before a long highway drive is worth it.
- Set pressures cold, before you set off, to the figures on your door-jamb sticker. Use the higher 'full load' figure if the car is carrying passengers and bags.
- Check the spare (or the inflator kit) - many newer cars have no spare wheel at all.
- Look for bulges and cracks in the sidewall; heat and long highway speeds make weak tires more likely to fail.
- If your tread is close to the wear bars, replace before the trip - not after.
