Driving Your Porsche to the Show? Check Your Tires First
Porsche approves specific tires for each model and marks them with an N code on the sidewall (N0, N1, N2 and so on). If you are replacing tires before the show, look for the N marking that matches your car, and keep the same tire on both wheels of an axle. Rear-wheel and staggered setups like the 911 run wider tires at the back than the front, so they cannot be rotated front-to-rear - plan to replace them in pairs.
- Check pressures when the tires are cold, using the figures on your door-jamb sticker or fuel flap.
- Look for cuts, bulges or uneven wear on the inside shoulder - common on lowered or performance cars.
- Read the four-digit date code on the sidewall (week and year). Tires older than about five or six years deserve a closer look even with tread left.
- Low-profile 20- and 21-inch tires are easily damaged by potholes and kerbs - take car-park ramps slowly.
