Planning a Camping or Off-Road Trip? Check Your Tires
Camping trips mean long drives, loaded vehicles and mixed surfaces, and the tires carry all the extra weight. Before you load up, check the load rating, the sidewalls and the spare. If you are considering all-terrain tires, check the size against your vehicle's original fitment first. Popular desert SUVs often come with different sizes depending on trim and year, and these are listed on our car model pages.
- Set pressures cold, using the higher 'full load' figure on the door-jamb sticker when the car is packed with gear.
- Look for cuts and bulges in the sidewalls after rocky or gravel tracks.
- Carry a pressure gauge and a compressor. Many drivers lower pressure for soft sand, and you must re-inflate before returning to the road.
- Check that the spare, jack and wheel brace are all in the car and in working order.
