Electric Cars and Tires: What to Know
Electric cars are heavier than comparable petrol models and deliver torque instantly, which can wear tires faster. Many EVs are fitted with tires designed for the extra weight, low noise and low rolling resistance, so when you replace them check the load index and any EV marking on the sidewall rather than choosing on size alone.
- Match the size, load index and speed rating to your door-jamb sticker or owner's manual.
- Check pressures often - under-inflated tires reduce range as well as grip.
- Follow the manufacturer's rotation schedule; EVs can wear the driven axle faster.
- Read the four-digit date code on the sidewall (week and year). Tires older than about five or six years deserve a closer look even with tread left.
